In October 2020, the German Research Foundation (GRF) launched the new network. It constitutes an ambition and cooperation initiated by the Institutes of Art History of the TU Dresden and JMU Würzburg.
It includes researchers from Bern, Dresden, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Göttingen, Halle-Wittenberg, Jena, Karlsruhe, Kiel, Regensburg, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Tübingen, Vienna, Würzburg as well as Zürich who endeavour to assess questions regarding the objects, sources and methods involved in the development of the late medieval building culture (15th to 16th century).
The first aim is to combine the diverse and sometimes particular research results and initiatives in the German speaking area. The starting point for this is the different, yet sometimes overlapping groundwork conducted by the members of the network within the realm of archive and source studies, as well as in the area of building research and architectural studies that offer various cultural and humanistic dimensions. A second goal consists of compiling and editing a cardinal joint publication on fundamental topics of the late medieval building culture. The promotion of early-career researchers forms the third objective of the network as there is currently a lack of young researchers within this field of research albeit being full of artefacts as well as sources.
We look forward to working together and hope to spark the interest of new colleagues for this promising topic.
